A case was registered on Sunday in Shamli in the district against BJP general secretary Amit Shah for allegedly inciting the public through his controversial "revenge" remark during an election rally.

He was booked under section 125 of the People's Representation Act (promoting enmity between different classes), District Magistrate N P Singh told PTI on Sunday.

The case was registered against Shah with Adrash Mandi police station after going through the video of his speech at Shamli.

After examination of the video, Shah's statement was found to be objectionable and violation of the Model Code of Conduct, he added.

Campaigning in Shamli, Narendra Modi's aide had recently said that the 2014 elections was the opportunity to take revenge for insult during Muzaffarnagar communal riots.

His comments evoked sharp reaction from various political parties.
