Police claim to have recovered a Nepalese driving license from Madani.

New Delhi: The Delhi police on Friday claimed to have arrested a key operative of the terror outfit Lashkar-e-Toiba from Mehrauli area of New Delhi.

Sources say Muhammad Umair Madani was arrested from near Qutub Minar and is believed to be the head of LeT's Nepal unit.

According to sources, Madani is a close associate of Hafiz Mohammad Saeed, the recently freed chief of terrorist group Jamaat ud Dawa and the alleged mastermind of November 26 Mumbai terror strikes.

"Madani is a close associate of LeT chief Hafiz Saeed and was a key operative of the outfit in Nepal," said a senior police officer.

Madani was arrested based on intelligence inputs and Delhi Police is interrogating him, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Alok Kumar was quoted as saying by news agencies.

"Though no arms and ammunition were recovered from Madani, he was found to be in possession of a diary, a Nepali driving licence, an identity card, fake Nepali and Indian currency," Kumar said.

The arrest comes on the back of the US issuing an advisory asking its citizens to maintain a low profile in India, calling it an unsafe location

Madani, born and brought up in India, is now a Nepalese citizen, says Delhi Police and is suspected to have entered India through the Indo-Nepal border.

Police claim was entrusted with selecting young men for terror training from four metros in India and has already sent as many as 30 people.
