TIRUCHY: A total of 2.01 lakh sqft of land in Tiruchy, worth Rs 29.20 crore, has been recovered so far by Anti-Land Grabbing Cell and handed over to the real owners. As soon as the AIADMK formed government, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa launched the Anti-Land Grabbing Cell to crackdown on land grabbers. Soon, petitions started pouring in and the cell received as many as 234 valid petitions. As many as 18 cases have been registered till date.The complaints were lodged not only against those with political clout but several others as well. Out of the 18 cases registered in the city, properties in 10 cases have been recovered and eight cases are pending in courts. The properties recovered in the 10 cases amounts to 1,22,736.5 sqft of land worth `11.79 crore. KK Nagar police handled three of these cases involving 70,700 sqft land worth `4.20 crore. While the Cantonment police station handled the case of one petitioner that involved 43,500 sqft of land worth `one crore, Woraiyur police recovered 6,720.5 sqft of land worth `69.44 lakh.Similarly, properties of the 15 petitions, who did not register cases as both parties arrived at solutions before the police, involving an area of 59,210 sqft of land worth `2.98 crore, was recovered and handed over to the rightful owners. “A few petitioners, mostly those from the common public, appealed to us to compromise the case within the police station concerned, fearing that filing of a case would delay justice. We were able to help a few of them,” E Ma Masanamuthu, city commissioner of police said.
