THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala Government Medical Officers Association (KGMOA) has registered strong protest against the issuance of a government order (GO) granting extension to specialist doctors. The specialist doctors have been given an extension of three months, from the date of retirement, to make their services available at short-staffed hospitals during the monsoon season. The KGMOA argued that the doctors at the primary health centres provide treatment for epidemics during the rainy season and giving extension to specialists serving in urban areas would prove totally useless. The KGMOA had earlier demanded raising the retirement age of all doctors in the government sector to 60. With shortage of doctors continuing to plague the health service, KGMOA state president Dr O Vasudevan and state secretary Dr M Muraleedharan reiterated their demand for raising the  retirement age to 60 years.
