Eleven candidates in Assembly polls are sons of famous leaders; all hope lineage will ensure victory

Kochi: Kerala politicians fight elections and make sure that their sons do too. Eleven candidates in the current Assembly elections are the sons of veteran politicians.

K Muraleedharan, son of veteran politician K Karunakaran, is contesting from Koduvally as a candidate of the Democratic Indira Congress-K (DIC-K), which was carved out of the Congress just before elections.

The DIC-K hopes that its tie-up with the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) would ensure Muraleedharan's victory. His rival is P T A Rahim, an Independent candidate supported by the Left Democratic Front (LDF).

Muraleedharan has represented Kozhikode in Parliament twice, but was defeated when he contested from Vadakancherry in the 2004 Assembly by-poll.

M K Muneer, son of former Chief Minister C H Mohammed Koya, is contesting from Mankada. Muneer, PWD Minister in the Oommen Chandy cabinet, represented Malappuram in the Assembly in 1996 and 2001, but was shifted to Mankada this time and faces Manjalam Kuzhiali, an Independent candidate supported by the LDF.

Actor K B Ganesh Kumar, son of Kerala Congress (B) leader, R Balakrishna Pillai, is trying his luck once again from Pathanapuram where he won in the last election. Ganesh, who was also a state minister for a brief period, is contesting against K R Chandramohan of the CPI.

Pillai, too, is seeking re-election from Kottarakara, where his rival is Aisha Potty of the CPI(M).

State Labour Minister, Babu Divakaran, son of former minister T K Divakaran, is trying his luck from Kollam where has won three previous elections.

Shibu Baby John, son of veteran RSP leader and former minister Baby John, is seeking re-election from Chavara, a constituency that his father represented in 1987, 1991 and 1996.

M V Shremyamskumar, son of Janata Dal (S) leader M P Veerendrakumar, is making his electoral debut from Kalpetta, while Binoy Viswam, son of CPI (M) leader Vishwanathan is seeking re-election from Nadapuram.

Other sons in the fray are K P Rajendran (Kodungalloor), son of former Minister K P Prabhakaran, M Jayraj (Vazhoor), son of former minister K Narayana Kurup, K P Mohanan (Peringalam), son of former Transport Minister P R Kurup and K Ajit (Vaikom), son of former MLA V Keshavan.
