KARAIKAL: Visitors entering Karaikal will soon feel like royalty. For, construction on the ‘Karaikal Gateway’ - the arch at the Nandalar border area, the entry point to Karaikal from the neighbouring Tamil Nadu region, has resumed after a hiatus of nearly four years.During 2006, following an appeal from the MLAs of Karaikal district to have an architectural entrance arch at Karaikal, similar to the grand arches constructed in Puducherry town, the then Chief Minister Rangasamy had sanctioned the construction of two arches - one at Nandalar border on the Chidambaram-Karaikal road and another at Vanchur near TR Pattinam on the Karaikal-Nagapattinam road.Construction works had then commenced at both the places with the PWD announcing that the work would be completed before January 2007. But a few months later halfway through the project, work came to a standstill. Now, with Rangasamy back in office as Chief Minister, the PWD has resumed the gateway construction work at the Nandalar site. Landscaping and beautification works will also be taken up here with the gateway reflecting the granduer of the French, said sources.
