Islamabad: It is finally official. Jonty Rhodes will be assisting the Pakistan Cricket Team for two weeks just before the start of their England series.
Jonty is known as one of the greatest fielders. He will be assisting Pakistan on a short-term basis and will utilise his expertise to improve the fielding of the senior players and the Pakistan-A team.
Pakistan are to play three Tests and five one-dayers versus England starting next month.
Former Pakistan captain Javed Miandad has, however, cricticised Pakistan Cricket Board for its decision to hire Rhodes as fielding consultant, saying it was nothing but a waste of money.
"I don't know where this idea came from. And I don't think Jonty would be able to make much of a difference to our fielding standards by just coming over here for a few weeks. It would be a waste of good money," he was quoted as saying in 'The News' on Tuesday.
Miandad, who has also coached Pakistan in the past, felt that the improvement in fielding standards depended on the individual player's willingness to improve.
"I am willing to tell the board the reasons for our inconsistent fielding standards. But at the end of the day, when it comes to fielding, each individual player must have enough keenness and interest to try, improve and gain experience in the fielding department. You can't force a player to dive, he has to do it himself," he added.
