Jairam warns action against AP power project
Ramesh threatened to slap show cause notice on the company promoting the power plant.

New Delhi: Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh on Tuesday threatened to slap another show cause notice on the company promoting the power plant in Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh, facing farmers' protest.

Responding to members' concern over killing of farmers in police firing, Ramesh said in the Rajya Sabha that if any violation had taken place "we will not hesitate to issue another show cause to stop work on this project."

Some action would be taken soon, he said adding his ministry would ascertain whether public hearing was held and any rules were violated.

East Coast Energy Pvt Ltd, developing a 2,640 MW Super Critical Coal fired power project in Santhabommali Mandal, is facing protests from farmers and fishermen against acquisition of land.

Describing the killing of farmers as "unfortunate and tragic," Ramesh said this was not the first time that violation had taken in this connection and his ministry had issued a show cause notice earlier as well. He said the project was located in the wet land.

During the Zero Hour, V Hanumantha Rao (Cong) said local people and fishermen do not want the power plant. "I request Ramesh to stop this project," he said, adding that there was a bird sanctuary in the nearby area and the power project would cause pollution.

Demanding cancellation of the project, he said farmers' land was being acquired in the name of the Special Economic Zones.

Rao was supported by M V Mysura Reddy (TDP).
