Indore: The government-run MY Hospital is spending lakhs of rupees for quite a different kind of 'operation', one that would rid its premises of the menace of rodents.

To prevent patients from contracting rodent-borne infections and provide a hygienic and clean ambiance, a month- long drive has been launched at a cost of Rs 55 lakh at the hospital, a senior official said on Monday.

A private company has been hired to make the hospital, which is said to be the biggest government health facility in Madhya Pradesh, free of rodents by December 3, Indore Division Commissioner Sanjay Dubey told reporters.

The campaign to combat the rodent problem would see poisoned eatables being placed in about 8,000 burrows, which will also be sprayed with poisonous fumes, Dubey said.

The MY Hospital has about 950 beds but, on any given day, it houses between 1,100 to 1,200 patients, Dubey added.
