India, USA: Off to space
Countries have been partners in space research since 1972. USA has helped India in launching satellites.

Bangalore: India and USA have been partners in space. The Indian space programme began in 1972 and the US has been helping it right since then.

1970

Satellite Instructional Television Experiment (SITE) launched using NASA’s satellite application technology, ATS-6.

SITE, which covers 2,400 villages in six states, was used to promote awareness programmes about agriculture, family planning, health and hygiene.

1980

INSAT-1B satellite put in orbit by US space shuttle, Challenger.

1997

MoU signed between India’s Department of Space, Department of Science and Technology and NASA for joint research in Earth and Atmospheric Sciences.

2001

Prime Minister and US president issue a joint statement that both countries would discuss how to increase civil space cooperation.

2004

India-US conference on Space Science, Applications and Commerce held at Bangalore in June.

Joint working group on space research set up.

May 9, 2006

ISRO and NASA sign agreement on including two US scientific instruments on board India's mission to the Moon, Chandrayaan-I.
