Inauguration of IWAIs Kollam terminal postponed

As per the schedule, the chairperson of Inland Waterways Authority of India Bhupender Prasad was to inaugurate the terminal which is part of the Kollam-Kottapuram National Waterway. Youth Congress activists on Saturday reached the terminal located near the ESI Hospital, Ashramam, and lodged their protest to the officials present there.Kollam MP N Peethambara Kurup, MLA P K Gurudasan, Union Minister of State for Power K C Venugopal or any other elected representatives were not invited for the function.The officials contacted the higher-ups in the authority and decided to postpone the event. The district administration and the media were not informed about the change in the schedule.On Sunday, Youth Congress activists reached the premises of the terminal to make sure that there was no move on the side of the officials to conduct the inauguration.Youth Congress Lok Sabha constituency committee president M M Sanjeev Kumar alleged that the officials behaved in an overbearing fashion, violating all accepted norms.The officials stated that they had originally planned to invite Union Minister of Shipping G K Vasan for the inauguration but as he was busy with the ongoing monsoon session of Parliament, the programme was changed.Sanjeev Kumar said that N Peethampara Kurup MP had contributed for the development of the terminal from his constituency development fund and had played a major role in setting up the terminal. “The officials showed ‘undue haste’ in inaugurating the terminal complex, while the works of the waterway were yet to be completed,” he said.According to sources, the inauguration will be held later this month.
