In Tirupati, Swami Pushkarini To Undergo Renovation And Cleaning In August

The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) on Monday shared that the Swami Pushkarini (temple tank) will be closed from August 1 to 31 for tank clean-up purposes and renovation works. It is customary to take up repairs and cleaning works of the Pushkarini before the annual Brahmotsavams.

As per reports, the entire water of the tank will be bailed out. Some major works, including the removal of sludge, cleaning of steps, painting of pipes and repairing damaged points will be done. Until these works are completed, the Pushkarini will remain closed, the TTD said in a press release and appealed to the devotees to cooperate.

Swami Pushkarini is the divine temple tank located on the northern side of the Srivari temple and is one of the major attractions for the devotees who visit the hill shrine of Tirumala.

The Swami Pushkarini is spread over one and a half acres. The Pushkarini has a mandapam in the middle known as “Neerata Mandapam,” built by the Saluva King Narasimha Raya in the year 1468. Later, the saint poet Tallapaka Annamacharya built the steps up to the midpoint of the mandapam. The Swami Pushkarini is one of the three crore odd holy thirthas that are believed to have been located on the green cover of the Tirumala hill range.

According to legends, the Swami Pushkarani was originally based in Vaikuntam, the dwelling of Lord Vishnu, but was transported by Garuda to earth for use by His Master, who came to earth in search of His consort Mahalakshmi and settled here as Venkateswara Swami in Kaliyuga. Bathing at Swami Pushkarini is considered very holy, equal to bathing in the holy River Ganga.

The water of Swami Pushkarini is scientifically treated by a state-of-the-art recycling facility. TTD has set up filters and state-of-the-art drains in the Pushkarini since 1972. Pushkarini water is drained at regular intervals and refilled with fresh water that emerges from its springs.
