IIT student arrested for credit card fraud in Ahmedabad
The student has been allegedly involved in online credit card frauds.

Ahmedabad: A student of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mumbai's Gandhinagar extension center has been arrested for his alleged involvement in online credit card frauds, police said on Saturday.

Ashish Ravindran Nathan, student of computer engineering, was arrested on Friday from a garden in the Satellite area on charges of conducting online credit card frauds, according to a statement issued by the cyber crime cell.

The accused was operating in the city since October last year and has committed fraud worth Rs seven lakh duping 25 persons, the statement said, adding that 15 sim cards, four mobile phones, three fake pan cards, credit card application form and cash of Rs 1.3 lakh were seized from his possession.

He was arrested following a complaint by one of the victims. Nathan has been remanded to police custody by a local court here for 14 days.

During interrogation, Nathan revealed that he used to get numbers from the yellow pages, call people posing as a Barclay's bank employee. He would than ask people about their credit card details on the pretext of giving them some free credit card offer.

After getting the card details, Nathan used would call the helpline of the credit card company impersonating as the original customer and ask them to change contact details in order to get all other relevant details.

He used to purchase online airline tickets with the help of some travel agents, cyber cell official said.
