I believe in Constitution, don't support anti-India slogans: Kanhaiya
Kanhaiya releases statement saying he believes in the unity and integrity of India

New Delhi: JNU student's union president Kanhaiya Kumar, who was sent to judicial custody in the JNU sedition case, on Wednesday issued a statement appealing for peace and saying he believes in the Constitution.

"I believe in the unity and integrity of India änd will contribute to the same," Kanhaiya said in his statement shortly before he was produced at Delhi's Patiala House court.

Kanhaiya was assaulted by lawyers while being produced in court. Sources said he identified at least two of the lawyers who attacked him and pointed them out to the judge.

In his statement, the student leader said he is against whatever happened at the Jawaharlal Nehru University on February 9 where anti-India slogans were raised at an event in memory of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru.

"From various sources I got to know that some people from JNU and some from outside were raising unconstitutional slogans. I don't support that,"he said.

"I am an Indian and I do not support anti-national activities," he said.

Kanhaiya also made an appeal to "maintian peace in the country society and universities."

Reacting to the statement, Delhi Police Commissioner BS Bassi said if Kumar applies for bail, then police will not

object to it.

"I personally feel, a young person...perhaps be given bail," he told reporters.
