The committee working on the new fee structure had proposed a four-fold increase.
New Delhi: The Human Resource Development Ministry has refused a proposal seeking a four-fold increase in fees of undergraduate courses at the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology.
HRD Minister Kapil Sibal termed the proposal of huge increase from Rs 50,000 a year to Rs 2.5 lakh a year as a deterrent to aspiring students.
The five-member Anil Kakodkar Committee, working on the new fee structure, has been asked to rework the proposal.
This committee made the recommendation for increasing the fee so that the IITs could become more self-sufficient and reduce their dependence on government grants.
The boards of all 15 IITs and Human Resource Development Minister along with his officials met on Friday to study the recommendations.
