New Delhi: Shah Rukh Khan's love for sports is well-known, but folks, he is quite a shaky wicket on the cricket field.
One has seen the King Khan on and off the cricket field during charity matches, but on Thursday he surprised cricket fans by appearing on the Cricket Extra show on Star Cricket channel alongside veterans Sunil Gavaskar and Harsha Bhogle during the lunch break of the third India-England cricket Test at the Oval.
Khan obviously added extra interest to an otherwise drab-sounding post-mortem session when cricket's first non-player celebrity Bhogle and the Little Master were to give expert views on all the cuts, sneaks, drop catches and dot balls that one had seen during the first session of the match. But Khan added all the drama to it.
He started by asking Gavaskar what a 'Wagon Wheel' meant? But by the time both Bhogle and Gavaskar had given him the answer, SRK was on a trip down memory lane, recalling his days of gulli cricket and his passion for hockey as a child.
Then came Bhogle's googly, “But you seem to keep running after the ball all the while when you are on field." Khan was more than honest with his answer: "I could never quite catch the ball, I ran after the ball in all sports."
Well, does that tell a story? Not quite. Khan says his on-field action as a child was quite romantic. "There were Surinder and Mahinder at the National Stadium (Delhi) and there I was as a kid, as a student of Columba's School, wearing thigh guards on my chest and keeping wicket... going back and forth to stop the ball."
Khan also revealed his adoration for Sunny Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid and recalled how he once called Sachin to his house and posed with the legend for a joint photograph.
From sports SRK then moved on to his second love – acting. Khan says he never aimed at being a part of Hollywood. "It's not false pride or something. Just that I feel Bollwood itself is a big industry and we already have made a mark in the world of entertainment."
Khan is all gung-ho about his latest film Chak De India and has gone all out to promote it. "I have 17 girls running around me... all 17-18 years old. But there is no song, no romance, no villain... it's all about serious sports."
Well, hockey is a different ball game after all. Little surprise then that people have already started booking for some hockey with Khan this week.
