BANGALORE: As many as 21 houses were razed on Tuesday morning at the Jayabheema Nagar, a slum behind Mantri Mall by Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).The slum earlier had 103 houses, of which 82 were demolished by Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL). Speaking to City Express, BBMP Engineer-in-Chief B T Ramesh said that after the Metro drive, those 82 families were housed at newly built houses near Jalahalli. However, the remaining 21 families were not vacated inspite of repeated notices from the BBMP and the BMRCL. “We even reminded them last week to vacate the place and gave seven days time. They did not move. A meeting conveyed by the chief secretary along with the BBMP and the BMRCL officials decided to demolish the houses. We started razing the houses at 6.30 am,” he said.BBMP official sources said that a park or a playground will be built in that area. The slum was close to the upcoming Metro station and falls next to the alignment of the BBMP’s proposed road which would connect the Metro station to the main road.Residents who have been provided alternate houses for resettlement in Jalahalli near Peenya are not willing to move. Official sources said that for them (residents) Jalahalli is too far. Moreover, children are enrolled in nearby schools. It can be recalled that earlier the residents had filed a case against the Metro in the civil court, for which the court ordered that Metro’s resettlement plan was fair and had dismissed the petition.
