HYDERABAD: A young Telangana activist climbed atop an advertisement hoarding in the heart of the city on Thursday morning sending the police into a tizzy and leaving the busy Koti area tense for more than nine hours. Telangana activists forced business establishments to down their shutters in the nearby areas and the mob went on a rampage damaging private vehicles and buses forcing the police to use force on a couple of occasions. The high drama started around 11 a.m when Are Srinivas, aged around 25, climbed an advertisement hoarding in front of the women's college in Koti. A group of Telangana employees who were staging a dharna in front of the DMHO office, noticed the youngster climb the hoarding but initially they thought he was a worker trying to fix something on the hoarding .
After reaching atop, the youth started to draw attention of the passersby. Srinivas, a native of Mancherial in Adilabad district, wanted the elected representatives of Congress and TDP from the region to submit their resignations once again for the cause of Telangana. Police rushed to the spot while Srinivas threatened to jump from there even as the crowds started gathering. Srinivas also carried a bottle of petrol and even threatened to immolate himself.

A host of political leaders including TRS legislator T Harish Rao, Telangana Jagruthi president Kavitha, Balladeer Gadar and Telangana advocates and other reached the place and persuaded Srinivas to come down.

Two fire tenders and truck loads of mattresses were brought and spread on the ground within the vicinity of the hoarding to minimise the impact of the fall, in case Srinivas jumped.

As politicians also started reaching there, Srinivas wrote letters and dropped them from there. In one of the letter, he reportedly said he wanted to have biryani from Bawarchi restaurant before taking the extreme step. Traffic was diverted and additional forces, including the Rapid Action Force was rushed to control the mob.

It was the arrival of Srinivas' parents at 8.35 p.m which brought curtains down on the high drama which lasted for more than nineandhalf hours.
