New Delhi: The death of Delhi Police Special Cell officer Mohan Chand Sharma on Friday, September 19, has been condoled by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA chief Sonia Gandhi.

The Madhya Pradesh government has announced a compensation of Rupees 5 lakh for the family of the deceased Inspector who had led the team that killed two terrorists and arrested another in an encounter in Jamia Nagar on Friday morning.

General Secretary of the Samajwadi Party, Amar Singh has also declared that Rupees 10 lakh will be given to the family of Sharma who laid down his life in service to the nation.

Meanwhile, Home Minister Shivraj Patil said that he had asked the Delhi Police Commissioner to help the family in every manner possible.

Delhi Police Commissioner YS Dadhwal said Sharma was a highly decorated police officer who had won seven gallantry medals including a President's award.

The 43-year-old brave officer who led from the front received several bullet injuries during the encounter in New Delhi on Friday morning.

He was operated upon at the Holy Family Hospital to remove bullets from his body but succumbed to his injuries later in the evening.

Sharma, born on July 2, 1965, joined the Delhi Police as a sub-inspector in 1989 and got an out of turn promotion in 1995 when he was elevated to the rank of an Inspector.
