Bangalore: Criticising the state government for delaying the appointment of Lokayukta, former Lokayukta N Santosh Hegde on Wednesday said, “For one year, the Lokayukta’s post has been kept vacant. If the owner of a company is absent for a long time, the productivity of that company will certainly come down and it is the same case with the Lokayuta.”
Speaking at a programme organised by Bazm-e-Niswan Charitable Trust to distribute scholarships to meritorious girl students, he said, “Education is an important element in the society. We can fight against many social evils if we are educated. Today, educating the girl child of a minority community is an achievement. It is good to have NGOs that take up welfare programmes of minority communities.”
Speaking on the occasion, the president of the trust Husna Sherrif said, “The trust has given Rs 80 lakh for the education of 2,800 underprivileged girls studying from PUC to PG courses. It is a dynamic organisation working since 1974 for the development of girls and women in minority communities. So far 35,000 girls have benefited from our programmes.”
Shanthinagar MLA N A Harris encouraged people to take the path of education at least to ask the government about the facilities available for the minorities guaranteed under the Indian Constitution.
