Mumbai: The success of Mughal-e-Azam seems to have brought on the trend of bringing the old back to life in the industry.
When the movie was released in colour print in 2004, it did brisk business and adequately covered the cost of colour prints generated through digital mastering.
And now, Haqeeqat, a black and white film first released in 1964, is slated to be re-released in colour at the end of 2007.
The film, directed by Chetan Anand, was based on the Indo-China war of 1962 and starred Balraj Sahni, Dharmendra, Vijay Anand, and Priya Rajvansh.
Chetan Anand’s son Ketan Anand has taken the initiative to re-release this film under his late father’s banner Himalya Films.
“After looking at the success of Mughal-E-Azam, I began to visualise Haqeeqat in colour. It's a great film, and the appeal of this film is timeless. Unlike Mughal-E-Azam, the subject is not outdated. The situation at the Indo-Pak border and the Indo-China border remains more or less the same. Rajeev Dwivedi, the same person who worked on Mughal-E-Azam, will handle the technical aspects of the colouring process,” said Ketan Anand.
“Haqeeqat was financed by the Punjab Government and it premiered at Odean Cinema in New Delhi. The president of India Dr Radhakrishnan attended it along with the entire army. This was the first time that a premier was attended by the head of state. Jawaharlal Nehru believed in the film as it conveyed the real situation about the war. My father canned the film in Ladakh under tough working conditions, as the camera and sound equipment was not very sophisticated at that time,” he added.
