Los Angeles: 'The Hangover II' is on its way to shatter numerous box office records by grossing USD 118.1 million in its first four days.

It has become the first R-rated comedy to help fuel the best Memorial Day weekend in history at the domestic box office followed closely by another film sequel 'Kung Fu Panda 2', which had generated USD 68.2 million.

Despite mixed reviews, the sequel is expected to gross another USD 20 million for a staggering five-day bow of USD 138.1 million, setting a new benchmark for comedies, the Hollywood Reporter said.

Overseas, Hangover opened to USD 59 million from 40 countries--three times higher than the original and bringing the sequel's global bow to almost USD 200 million. Hangover grossed USD 16.4 million in the UK, the best ever launch for a

US comedy, as well as the top opening of 2011.

Kung Fu Panda 2 also contributed to the boom, grossing USD 53.8 million in its first four days. The 3D toon should end Monday with a five-day total of USD 68.2. The animation film has done great overseas, where it grossed a mighty USD 57 million from 8,023 markets in only 11 territories.

In seven territories, it scored the best opening ever for an animated title and in China, scored the biggest opening of all time for a foreign film in grossing USD 18.5 million. Directed by Todd Phillips, Hangover grabbed the best

opening ever for a comedy, besting the USD 85.7 million earned by Bruce Almighty over Memorial Day weekend in 2003, as well as the biggest Saturday ever for a comedy (USD 29.7 million).

Hangover's Friday-Sunday tally was USD 86.4 million. Coming in third at the domestic box office was Disney's 'Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides', which grossed a solid USD 39.3 million for the three-day weekend.
