Honouring legendary Carnatic vocalist M S Subbulakshmi, jewellery brand Tanishq on Monday launched limited edition gold coins with her image engraved on them. The special coins were launched amid an elite gathering of music connoisseurs and performing artistes. Legendary musician M Balamuralikrishna unveiled the first coin. Speaking at the event, he said, “MS brought immense glory to Carnatic music. I had the good fortune of meeting her a few times and I found her to be a simple person. I’m happy that Tanishq has come up with such a fitting tribute.” Sudha Ragunathan, one of the guests of honour at the event, recalled her guru ML Vasanthakumari’s friendship with MS and added that she never missed an opportunity to accompany her guru to visit Subbulakshmi. “My guru looked up to her and to me, MS is like Goddess Saraswathi,” she said. The launch was preceded by a rendition of MS Subbulakshmi’s compositions by a group of young singers. This was organised by singer Ashok Ramani, who was also present at the function. Two thousand special coins weighing 2 gm, 4 gm and 8 gm will be available for sale at all Tanishq stores. The coins have been released in aid of Chennai-based Cancer Institute and TAG-VHS Diabetes Research Centre. Tanishq has donated `5 lakh to each organisation.
