A girl student of a pharmacy college allegedly committed suicide after being ragged by her seniors and a faculty member, police said on Thursday. Four of her seniors, all females, and the faculty member were arrested on Thursday, they said. Anita Sharma (18), pursuing her B-Pharma second year course from the RKDF College, hanged herself on Wednesday at her residence in Jeevan Vihar Society in Bhopal, police said.
A note, purportedly written by Anita, blamed her four seniors and the faculty member for the suicide, police said. According to the note, the girl's seniors had been allegedly ragging her from the time she got admission in the college.
They forced her to write their mid-semester copies and when she brought this to the notice of faculty member, identified as Manish, he asked her to obey her seniors if she wanted to continue in the college, police said.
Later, when the seniors came to know about her complaint, they started harassing her further and threatened to throw acid on her as well as rape her, the suicide note said. Police arrested her four seniors, identified as Nidhi, Dipti, Divyanshi and Preeti and faculty member Manish, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Dilip Singh Tomar told reporters.
They were arrested on the charge of abetment to suicide, he added. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Thursday directed the authorities to seriously deal with the issue of ragging.
State Chief Secretary R Parsuram also chaired a meeting in this regard and directed officials to take stern measures to prevent recurrence of such an incident. MP Home Minister Uma Shankar Gupta visited the residence of the victim on Thursday to console the grieving family members and directed the police to take immediate action against those whose names were mentioned in the suicide note.
