The administration of the Government Vellore Medical College Hospital (GVMCH) on Tuesday issued termination order to a contract worker at the hospital for demanding and accepting a bribe of `150 from a patient for taking an X-ray. The Dean of the institution, P Ravi Sankar, issued on the spot termination order to Janardhanan, the contract worker, following the instruction from District Collector P Sankar, who conducted a surprise inspection in the hospital.
Hospital sources said the Collector, on his way to the Grama Sabha meeting organised at Kattupudur panchayat in Kaniyambadi union, paid a surprise visit to the hospital and went around the blood bank, trauma care, in-patient and causality ward from 10 am to 11 am. He enquired with the patients about the quality of treatment and heard their grievances.
Ponnamal, a patient, alleged that a hospital contractor worker had received Rs 150 from her on Monday to take an X-ray and that she did not receive the report till Tuesday morning. Following this, the Collector enquired with the staff in the Radiology Department and found that Janardhanan had collected the patient’s X-Ray report
on behalf of Ponnammal. However, he had not handed it over to the patient.
The Collector immediately directed Ravi Sankar to take disciplinary action against Janardhanan and also conduct a detailed enquiry on the issue to find if any other staff had been involved in such malpractice. The enquiry revealed that the allegation was true and the dean terminated Janardhanan from service and issued the order on the spot.
After inspecting the out-patient ward, the Collector instructed the hospital officials to deploy more doctors to attend to women patients and also deploy additional staff in the medicine dispensary to disburse medicine without delay. The officials of Public Works Department were directed to take up repair works on the hospital campus and fill the potholes to avoid stagnation of water inside the hospital.
The Collector inspected the Adi Dravidar Girls Hostel at Bagayam. He admonished the warden directing him to provide quality food as per the menu.
