London: Four Indians who did not have the right to work in the UK have been arrested during a raid by immigration officials on a supermarket in Oxford this week.
During the raid, the four men, aged between 21 and 36, were arrested for immigration offences. One of the four was also arrested on suspicion of possessing a counterfeit Belgian passport and National Insurance card, official sources said.
Two of them remain in immigration detention, awaiting removal from the country while one 24-year-old who was charged with fraud and ID Cards Act offences, appeared at Oxford Magistrates' Court on Wednesday.
He was remanded in custody to appear at Oxford Crown Court on August 7.
Another man was granted immigration bail and the UK Border Agency was furnishing procedure to deport him.
The UK Border Agency said the store owner faced a fine of up to 40,000 pounds unless he could prove the correct checks were carried out on the men.
Inspector Dick Stratton of the UK Border Agency said "We're committed to removing people who have no right to be in the UK. As long as there are illegal jobs, the UK will be an attractive place for illegal immigrants. This operation should serve as a warning for those who break the law."
Companies who fail to carry out checks when employing migrant workers face fines of up to 10,000 pounds per illegal employee.
