It was a sad end of the race for a nine-year-old horse, which once galloped the Bangalore Race Course, as it writhed in pain and succumbed after being mowed down by a speeding municipality garbage truck on Tuesday.
The former race horse was brought here a few years ago by a local man to earn money by offering rides to the tourists. While onlookers said that the lorry knocked down the horse straying on Boat House Road, municipal drivers claimed that it was the animal that ran straight into the vehicle.
The front windscreen of the vehicle broke in the impact, while the animal was severely injured. Animal Husbandry Department doctor Sugumaran and IPAN (India Project for Animal Welfare) managing trustee Nigel Otter reached the spot, but they could not revive the animal. Finally, the municipality vehicle transported the carcass of the horse to a garbage yard for burial. “The horse, was treated like a ‘prince’ before retirement.
