Fishermen killing: Italian ship case adjourned

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday adjourned the hearing on whether to release Italian ship Enrica Lexie from the Kochi port. The matter will be taken up for hearing on Wednesday.

The ship has been at the port since February 15, when two Italian marines on board shot dead two Kerala fishermen, allegedly believing them to be pirates.

The Supreme Court on Monday took strong objection to the deal reached between Italy and the fishermen's families, whereby Italy promised to pay a compensation of Rs 1 crore to the bereaved relatives of the fishermen. After the deal, the legal heirs of the two dead fishermen filed an application before the Kerala High Court stating that they wanted to withdraw the case against the Italian marines.

The apex court raised the objections when the Kerala government told it that the state had no objection if the ship MV Enrica Lexie was released.

However, the Ministry of External Affairs has made it clear that despite the deal, the case against the Italian Marines would continue.
