The first snapshot of underworld kingpin Chhota Rajan, currently lodged in Tihar Jail, has emerged, nine years after his arrest at Indonesia’s Bali airport and subsequent extradition to India.

Looking healthy, the photograph dispels rumors of Chhota Rajan’s death during the Covid pandemic or of ill-health. However, its release has reignited fears of a possible attack on him in jail, alarming intelligence agencies.

The image of Rajan has surfaced on various social media platforms, a matter News18 cannot independently verify.

Rajan, currently held in a high-security cell in Jail No. 2 of Tihar Jail, was a former henchman turned foe of the notorious underworld don Dawood Ibrahim.

The gangster faces threats from both Dawood Ibrahim and Chhota Shakeel, with the latter having repeatedly threatened to have him killed in jail, as per The Times of India report.

Who is Chhota Rajan?

Chhota Rajan, born Rajendra Sadashiv Nikalje, is accused of numerous murders, extortion, and drug trafficking. He grew up in Mumbai and allegedly became involved in petty crime during his youth before eventually leading one of the city’s crime syndicates.

He was formerly a close associate of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, the founder of the crime syndicate D-Company. However, their relationship soured, and Rajan became a fierce rival.

Following his falling out with Dawood, it’s widely believed that Rajan switched allegiance to intelligence agencies.

In 2000, Dawood’s associates attempted to assassinate Rajan, though he survived, his health began to deteriorate. Since 2010, he has been undergoing dialysis. There were reportedly further attempts on Rajan’s life by Dawood’s men, including one in 2015 in New South Wales.

Rajan was sentenced to life imprisonment for orchestrating the killing of Mumbai-based journalist Jyotirmoy Dey in 2011. Dey was shot dead by four men on motorcycles under Rajan’s orders.

According to the police, Rajan was displeased with articles written by Dey that portrayed him in a bad light, leading him to order the journalist’s murder.
