CHENNAI/THOOTHUKUDI: It was a diabolic twist of fate that took a man over 2,600 kilometres from the port town of Thoothukudi to the capital city of the country, New Delhi, only to experience the macabre violence of a bomb blast, and eventually succumb to the horrific wounds it left him with.P Pathiran, 57, a superintendent engineer with the V O Chidambaranar Port Trust in Thoothukudi, was one among the 13 people who died in Wednesday’s bomb blast at Delhi High Court.His body was brought to Chennai on Friday.Pathiran, the nodal Officer of Public-Private Partnership Projects of the VOC Port, was deputed to assist the legal adviser in a case against the Ministry of Shipping and the Port Trust, and had gone to the Court in this connection. He was waiting his turn to get permission to enter the court, when the bomb went off.Critically injured in the explosion, Pathiran was admitted to the Ram Manohar Lohia hospital in New Delhi, where he died on Thursday.Officials of the Chennai Port Trust received the body at the airport by placing wreaths, after which it was sent by road to Alwarkarkulam, his native village near Vallanadu, Thoothukudi. The body is expected to reach his village early on Saturday, and the last rites will be performed the same day.In Thoothukudi, the Port Trust chairman and staff condoled Pathiran’s death at a meeting, where a message from Minister of Shipping G K Vasan was read out. The Port Trust had arranged to take Pathiran’s wife to Delhi and to bring her back along with his body by flight.Pathiran is survived by his wife Vadivurani, a son, and a daughter who is married.
