Eng ready to play it dirty to be on top
Eng has reached the quarterfinals for the second time, and defender Rio Ferdinand doesn't mind playing dirty.

Buehlertal (Germany): Winning ugly is still winning, and that's all that really matters.

England has reached the quarterfinals at the World Cup for the second straight time, and defender Rio Ferdinand doesn't mind if the team isn't playing beautiful soccer.

"In an ideal world, we'd love to be playing fantastic football ... but football's not like that," Ferdinand said on Wednesday. "At the moment we're not playing fantastic football but we're getting the results. We're pleased with that."

England plays Portugal in the quarterfinals on Saturday. Two years ago, Portugal eliminated England from the last eight of the European Championship on penalties.

Another ugly win will be enough for England to reach the World Cup semifinals for the first time since 1990.

"It's not about playing beautiful football and not moving on," England midfielder Owen Hargreaves said. "It's about being successful."

For the next round, Hargreaves is concerned about details like defending set pieces and not relying on long balls.

"If it came to a technical game, we'd be very well suited," Hargreaves said. "If it came down to a very physical game, we'll be very well suited."

Besides a spot in the last four, England would also like to beat a team coached by Luiz Felipe Scolari.

The Brazilian was in charge of Portugal at Euro 2004 and led Brazil to victory over England in the 2002 World Cup quarterfinals.
