CHENNAI: Two persons have been arrested for the kidnap and murder of a cab driver from J J Nagar in October 2011. In his complaint lodged on October 11, 2011, B Pandian (40), owner of a call taxi agency in J J Nagar, said a man called Rajesh booked a taxi to go from Vadapalani to Perungalathur on October 5. Around 10.30 pm, agency driver Dharmaraj left with a car to pick up the passengers from a hotel in Vadapalani. Since then, there was no trace of either the driver or the vehicle.Registering a case, a special police team that began investigation into the case initially suspected that the driver had decamped with the vehicle and went in search of him to his hometown Ramanathapuram. However, Dharmaraj’s parents claimed that their son had not visited them recently. Things took a turn when the body of a 35-year-old man, found amid bushes on the GST Road in Guduvanchery and kept in a government mortuary, was identified as Dharmaraj. The police team began a fresh probe starting at the Vadapalani hotel from where the cellphone call was made by ‘Rajesh’ to the taxi agency and the murdered driver had picked up two passengers. Police identified the killers as D Rajesh (30) of Manmangalam in Karur and S Babu (25) of Nagamalai in Pudukottai. When questioned, the two claimed that they planned to steal the car after murdering the driver. When the vehicle was near the Mudichur bridge, they had strangled Dharmaraj with a nylon rope and abandoned his body on the road and escaped.
