Delhi witnesses more rapes than the next five metros put together
Delhi, in 2011, witnessed more rapes than Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore and Hyderabad put together.

New Delhi: Delhi lives up to its notoriety for being the most unsafe place for women, according to the latest National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) statistics which gives figures for 2011. Other cities do not come remotely close. More rapes were reported from Delhi (572) than from Mumbai (221), Kolkata (46), Chennai (76), Bangalore (97) and Hyderabad (59) put together.

The figures for some other prominent cities were: Pune (79), Ahmedabad (60), Bhopal (100), Jaipur (92), Lucknow (38), Patna (27), Kochi (30), Thiruvananthapuram (39) and Coimbatore (9).

A statewise distribution of 2011's rape statistics sees Madhya Pradesh at 3406 incidents accounting for14.1 per cent of the country's recorded rape cases, closely followed by West Bengal at 2363 incidents (9.8 per cent) and Uttar Pradesh at 2042 incidents (8.4 per cent). The other state where a large number of rapes have been reported from is Rajasthan at 1800 incidents (7.4 per cent). Assam and Maharashtra are tied in the next slot with 1700 incidents each (7 per cent each). Andhra Pradesh at 1442 incidents (6 per cent) and Kerala at 1132 incidents (4.7 per cent) also report significant number of rapes.

Other major states fare like this: Odisha (1112 incidents, 4.6 per cent), Bihar (934 incidents, 3.9 per cent), Jharkhand (784 incidents, 3.2 per cent), Haryana (733 incidents, 3 per cent), Tamil Nadu (677 incidents, 2.8 per cent), Karnataka (636 incidents, 2.6 per cent), Punjab (479 incidents, 2 per cent), Gujarat (439 incidents, 1.8 per cent) and Jammu & Kashmir(277 incidents, 1.1 per cent). Uttarakhand, Goa and the northeastern states of Tripura, Sikkim, Manipur, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh fare much better (each recording less than 1 per cent of the total number of reported cases in the country). Sikkim with 16 incidents recorded the least number of cases among all states in the country.
