Delhi Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal resigned on Wednesday. Sources said Baijal submitted his resignation to President Ram Nath Kovind citing personal reasons. However, Baijal’s resignation hasn’t been accepted yet as the President is out of town, sources said, adding that Baijal, who is 75+, cited his age as one of the reasons behind his resignation.
A 1969-batch IAS officer of AGMUT (Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territory) cadre, Baijal took over as the Delhi L-G in December 2016 after his predecessor Najeeb Jung quit. He served as the 21st Lt Governor of Delhi for a period of five years and four months from December 31, 2016 to May 18, 2022.
Baijal’s power tussle with Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has always been a talking point during his tenure with both often clashing over several governance-related issues.
Baijal, a representative of the central government, had earlier served in Delhi as vice-chairman of the Delhi Development Authority. He also served as the Union home secretary in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led BJP government. During the UPA regime, Baijal served in the urban development ministry where he looked after implementing the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission.
He also served as the chairman and managing director of Indian Airlines. This apart, his past stints include serving as the secretary-general of the Federation of Indian Airlines, chief executive officer of Prasar Bharati Corporation, development commissioner of Goa and counsellor in charge of India’s aid programme in Nepal in a career spanning 37 years.
