New Delhi: A prominent Muslim cleric on Friday welcomed the greetings extended by US President George W Bush on the occasion of Eid-ul-Zuha but appealed to him to "love the Muslim community and stop cruelties" in Afghanistan, Iraq, Palestine and in its prisons.
"I welcome the greetings extended by Bush to Muslims all over the world on this Eid-ul-Zuha. I appeal to him to love Muslim community and stop cruelties in Afghanistan, Iraq, Palestine and in their prisons," Maulana Mufti Mohd Mukkaram, Shahi Imam of Old Delhi's Fatehpuri Masjid, said.
He also said he supported the Palestinian cause and Iranian cause, saying these were not against any country.
The cleric's comments came while addressing the faithful at the Masjid during special prayers on the occasion of Eid.
In his message on Wednesday, Bush said he and his wife Laura were sending their best wishes to all Muslims across the world for a "memorable celebration". "This holiday helps ensure the important values of compassion and devotion are passed on to future generations," the US President said.
Mukkaram also welcomed Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's 15-point programme for the minorities and demanded the immediate implementation of the Sachar committee report.
The cleric said the recommendations of the Srikrishna Commission, which looked into the riots in Mumbai soon after the Babri Masjid demolition, should be implemented soon.
He also demanded that adequate compensation be given to all victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.
