KOCHI: The Kochi Corporation is reeling under the High Court’s directive allowing the waste produced under the jurisdiction of local bodies without waste treatment plants, to be dumped at the Brahmapuram plant. Kochi Mayor Tony Chammany has already expressed concern over the Court’s order. The existing plant at Brahmpauram is defunct and the Corporation is finding it difficult to treat the waste transported to the plant everyday. If the other municipalities also start dumping waste at the plant, waste will get accumulated in the plant and will pave way for widespread protests from the residents in the area.Regarding the High Court verdict, Corporation secretary Ajit Patil said that they have not received the copy of the judgment. “The fact is that until the construction of the new plant is over, it will not be feasible to allow the neighbouring municipalities to dump the waste at Brahmapauram,” Patil said.He said that even if the new plant is constructed, the Corporation Council will decide if the facility can be used by the other municipalities. “We hope that we will be able to commission the new plant within two years. If the new plant gets the capacity to meet the additional requirement, there will not be any issues,” added Patil. The High Court’s order came after considering the submissions of chairpersons of 11 municipalities in the district. Meanwhile, the Mayor is planning to convene a special Council meeting to discuss the verdict and how the issue can be resolved.
