A large number of Congressmen, including the PCC chief Bhupesh Baghel, were arrested on Thursday while protesting outside the Anti-Corruption Bureau office, demanding the arrest of Panchayat and Rural Minister Ajay Chandrakar in connection with a disproportionate assets case. However, they were released later.
"A total of 78 Congress workers, including Bhupesh Baghel, were arrested while protesting before the Economic Offences Wing/ACB office premises," Raipur Superintendent of Police, O P Pal told PTI, adding that they were released later.
Congress workers, including former MLA Kuldeep Juneja and Raipur Mayor Kiranmayee Nayak, led by Bhupesh Baghel reached the ACB office this afternoon and demanded registration of a first information report (FIR) against BJP minister Ajay Chandrakar after an ACB court's order, as early as possible.
Later, they also shouted slogans against Chandrakar, demanding his resignation and arrest on the issue.
"Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh is trying to protect his minister. Chandrakar should resign on moral grounds or he should be sacked by the CM," Baghel told reporters.
It appears that the ACB was also under pressure for not filing FIR against the minister, he said.
The Congress would take up the issue before the Election Commission, Baghel said. Notably, the Special Judge (Anti Corruption), M D Jagdalla of Dhamtari district had ordered the ACB to register an FIR against Ajay Chandrakar, in connection with a case of disproportionate assets on Wednesday.
The court had also ordered to present a copy of the FIR registered by April 21 before it.
