Bhopal: With the assembly elections round the corner, the political scene in Madhya Pradesh continues to look very hazy with both the ruling BJP and the Opposition Congress not announcing names of candidates for the polls yet.
Both parties had said earlier, with a lot of fanfare, that this time the names of candidates would be announced well in advance but nothing of the sort has happened till now.
One factor that could be responsible for the delay could be that neither the BJP nor the Congress want to be the first to declare candidates.
Both appear to be waiting for the other to make the first move.
Also Bharatiya Janashakti Party National President Uma Bharti is posing some problems to the parties with her announcement that those aspirants who fail to get tickets from either the BJP or the Congress would be welcome to join her party and contest elections.
The same is true to a lesser extent about Mayawati's Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and Mulayam Singh Yadav's Samajwadi Party (SP), marginal players in the state, but who are now eyeing rebels from the Congress and BJP.
Meanwhile, a senior political leader said the main reason for this delay is the upcoming Diwali festival.
He said both the BJP and the Congress do not wish to spoil Diwali celebrations for those unlucky ones who would be denied tickets for the elections.
Activity on the selection of candidates is happening at different levels in both parties - Congress leaders are still camping in New Delhi while BJP leaders are making the rounds in Bhopal.
