BANGALORE: The first Liver Auto  Transplantation in the state was performed at HCG on a 64-year-old patient. During the auto transplantation, the patient’s own healthy liver was transplanted back into his body. Thimme Gowda from Bangalore was diagnosed with Hepatocellular Carcinoma (liver cancer) three weeks ago. He went for a treatment to a private hospital in the city which further referred him to oncologists.Dr Sanjay Govil, liver transplant surgeon, HCG, said, “Initially the patient complained of abdominal fullness and loss of appetite which was bothering him since the beginning of last month. The ultra sound scan detected a melon sized tumour in the centre of his liver. The tumour was awkwardly situated at a place where it partially obstructed all three hepatic veins that carry blood out of the liver towards the heart.” The oncologists adopted this procedure to remove the patient’s liver from the body so that it could be washed with a preservative solution (HTK solution) and kept in ice so that the liver could survive a number of hours without blood flow. He further said, “Any attempt at trying to remove the tumour by standard surgery would have resulted in profuse bleeding from the veins that were likely to be injured while removing the tumour.”The technique is also called ‘ex vivo’ resection which means out of body. “Ex vivo is performed when the tumour involves either the veins draining the liver or the main vein draining blood back to the heart ,” added Dr Govil.
