CHENNAI: Taking a break from classrooms and routine life, students of the National College of Design, Pantheon Road, organised a play on Monday at Museum Theatre, Egmore. The proceeds of the show went to the Cross Blood Foundation. The event was more of a cultural function for the college, as mimicry, songs and dance performances by the students preceded the play called 'Carry on 2012'. There was also a fusion of the contemporary with the classical, as students performed Bharatanatyam and even danced to songs from Hindi and Tamil movies. Students and their family members gathered in large numbers to cheer and motivate the participants at the event. There was also a special performance from a young kid named Trishul Asrani, who danced to various old numbers from Hindi films. His perfect moves made the audience crave for more and his performance was easily the highlight of the evening. The event gained momentum when the play began. The play focussed on the theme of the world coming to an end on Dec 21, 2012. The ruler of the kingdom of Mayank writes the calender till that date and invites prominent personalities from across the globe to discuss ways to stop the world from destruction. So, you've a not-so-zero-size Kareena Kapoor, Robot Rajini or Chitti from the hit movie Enthiran, scientist Jaspal Bhatt, Harry Potter and Superman, among others in the list of those trying to save the world.A majority of the first half of the play focussed on inviting these personalities on stage. The artistes came onboard with their own unique antics, which were peculiar to the characters they played. For example, Kareena Kapoor danced to Chammak Challo, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan to Crazy Kiya Re, and Chitti to the background score of Enthiran. When the commotion settled down, all the personalities came up with their unique ideas to save themselves from the impending disaster. However, a tremor that soon follows their discussion makes them realise that their powers hardly seem to work. Finally, the voice of God makes them understand that Dec 21, 2012 will just be another day and the only way to combat destruction is to do good things in life. The artistes sing and dance to this and with this, the curtains come down. The students deserved an applause for coming up with an unique concept for the play. Though the artistes-students lipsynced the dialogues, it was a performance straight from the heart. What was heartwarming to see was how easily the students jelled with this characters. For the students of National College of Design, this event was definitely one they will cherish and remember for long.
