Chandigarh: At least 2 firemen have been killed while two others are still feared trapped after a fire broke out in a four-storey building in Chandigarh. The building in Chandigarh's Sector 17 collapsed after the fire trapping the ill-fated firemen under the debris.
According to authorities, the firemen were engaged in dousing the flames when the building collapsed. The building belonged to the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology.
"The fire took place at the regional computer centre building. All the materials inside were combustible. Most of them were in made out of wood," said Chandigarh Municipal Commissioner Vivek Pratap Singh.
Authorities fear that key data of Punjab government as well as Chandigarh Administration may have been destroyed in the fire in the fire which started at around 4.50 PM, an official spokesman said.
"The fire spread very fast and several fire tenders were pressed into service to douse the flames. However, the building collapsed at around 9.16 PM," he said.
As many as 14 fire tenders from Chandigarh, SAS Nagar and Panchkula were rushed to the spot.
