CHENNAI: A history-sheeter was arrested for kidnapping a teenage girl from the city, after promising to get her financial assistance from the Chief Minister to fund her studies,  in Madurai on Friday. Police said they apprehended Kannan (40) at the Maatuthavani bus stand in Madurai and rescued Yamuna Devi (14), daughter of  lorry driver Baskaran from Kozhikaal Nathum village, Tiruchenkodu, Namakkal district.  A resident of Rajapalayam, Kannan was allegedly involved in 51 cases. He came across a story about Yamuna’s brother Gopinath in a Tamil magazine, which said that Gopinath, a Plus Two student, had received financial assistance from the CM to pursue higher studies in Medicine.  The article also described how Gopinath’s family could not afford to fund his education even though he had secured high marks in the board exams.  Kannan then made a trip to the boy’s village. Posing as the CM’s security officer, he promised the family that he would get financial assistance to fund the education of Gopinath’s sister, Yamuna. On Sunday, he brought the family to Chennai in a rented car and lodged them in a mansion on Choolaimedu High Road. Telling her parents that he was taking Yamuna to meet the Education Minister for his signature, he drove away with the girl in the same car. Kannan and the girl then went missing. Following a complaint, the police registered a case. Cops said they traced Kannan to Madurai through his mobile phone signals.  The man was being brought to Chennai, police said.
