THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Barely hours after the city police detained a middle-aged woman, Suma, on suspicion of abducting a newborn baby, the real mother of the child appeared before the police on Friday, ending all suspicions regarding the incident. The woman, identified as Ambika, came to the Thampanoor police station and gave a statement that the child belonged to her and she had handed it over to Suma as she had no means to raise it. According to the police, Ambika was a single mother and hence did not wish to raise the baby. She had appeared before the police after she became aware of the pandemonium her act had caused through media reports. She told the police that she had delivered the baby at Victoria Hospital in Kollam. The mother and child were transferred to Sree Avittam Thirunal Hospital here after Ambika’s health condition worsened. Following her discharge from the hospital on Thursday, she decided to abandon the child in the Ammathottil of the Child Welfare Council and even reached its headquarters at Thycaud. But, she could not execute her plan as there were several people around. It was then that Suma, hailing from Rajaji Nagar Colony nearby, came across Ambika and offered to keep the baby, according to Ambika’s statement. Meanwhile, Suma’s relatives also turned up at the police station and informed that she was mentally unstable and under treatment. They also produced documents to prove their claim. The police, after being convinced that both the women were telling the truth and that they did not have any malicious intentions such as child-trafficking, let them go. They admitted Ambika to the SAT Hospital as she was physically not fit. The baby has also been admitted to the hospital. Suma was let off with her relatives. The police had, on Thursday night, detained Suma, who was seen near the Government Hospital, Thycaud, with the child, after the local people raised suspicion that she was involved in child-trafficking. Following her detention, Suma had also given a similar version of the story told by Ambika.
