BANGALORE: The arrest of former chief minister B S Yeddyurappa has neither surprised nor shocked anybody in the state BJP as everybody was anticipating such a development ever since a host of corruption cases were filed against him. However, this development will surely change the equations in the state BJP as well as in the government. Till now, it was only Yeddyurappa who used to call the shots and he was synonymous with BJP in the state for the last three decades. Such was Yeddyurappa’s clout that he single handedly ensured the victory of D V Sadananda Gowda as the leader of BJP Legislative Party against a formidable opposition led by BJP National General Secretary H N Ananthkumar, state BJP President K S Eshwarappa, RDPR Minister Jagadish Shettar and Bellary Reddy brothers. Now with Yeddyurappa away from the party affairs, though temporarily, his opponents would definitely try and take advantage of the situation. Ananthkumar who faced humiliation at the hands of Yeddyurappa during the Legislative Party leader election, might see a bigger and effective role in the state politics for himself in the coming days.On the other hand, it would end the free run of Yeddyurappa supporters in the party and the government to a great extent. Though, Yeddyurappa’s supporters are in majority, the absence of a formidable leader, who can match Yeddyurappa’s capabilities and can keep them united will be a major problem for them. The possibility of some of his supporters switching sides also cannot be ruled out at this juncture. As far as Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda is concerned, it appears that he will have a free hand in running the government. Till now, he was sandwitched between Yeddyurappa and Eshwarappa camps and had to take orders from both the groups. Now with Yeddyurappa out of scene, the Eshwarappa camp will certainly try to dominate Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda.
