BANGALORE: With no response from the Central government to the promises assured to them, over 2.75 lakh executives and non-executives of BSNL will go on a one day strike on December 15.The employees of the seventh largest Telecommunication company in the world, are urging the Central government to improve their infrastructure by procuring the materials needed including cables, GSM equipment, broadband modems, data cards, joining kits etc.Announcing the strike on Tuesday, Gundanna C K, convenor of Joint Action Committee of BSNL Associations, said, “We suspect the role of vested interest groups behind the delays in the procurement of materials. Due to the delay our PSU (BSNL) is losing its significance among the people. About 92 million mobile users and 29 million landline users could expect disruption of services on the day of the strike.”Customer care centres which accepts payment of bill’s, sale and recharge of SIM cards will also close down as the customer care services will be affected on December 15.Around 18,000 employees from Karnataka and 8,000 employees from Bangalore will be participating in the one-day strike, Gundanna further said.“While other mobile markets in India are recording highest growth globally over the last five years, the delays in calling for tenders to place significant orders for BSNL equipment have made us weak and made way for other private players to push us down,” employees alleged. The employees also said that the move of Department of Telecommunication and TRAI to remove them from being eligible for the Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS) was unwarranted and unjustified on part of the administration. They will also be protesting against the immediate repatriation of ITS non-optees.
