New Delhi: In what was a blast from the past for Punjab chief minister Prakash Singh Badal as a court framed charges against him, his wife Surinder Kaur, MP son Sukhbir Singh Badal and seven others in a corruption case on Friday.
The special court at Ropar ordered that charges of corruption and disproportionate assets against Badal and others be framed. Initially, the Vigilance department had claimed a Rs 3,500 crore scam by the Badals, but this figure was later brought down to Rs 78 crore.
The ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) termed the charges in the disproportionate assets case, lodged during former Congress rule, as being politically motivated.
"Badal has filed cases against Amrinder Singh, the former Chief Minister of Punjab. There are two criminal cases as well as two civil suits. Therefore, this was a result of total malafide prosecution," says Defence Counsel, Vikram Chowdhary.
