BANGALORE: Next time an autorickshaw driver refuses to drive you to your designation or demands excess charges, just send a SMS to Bangalore Traffic Police on 52225.Though the initiative is only a couple of months old, the Bangalore Traffic Police has booked 850 cases after following up on complaints lodged through SMS. There are more than one lakh auto-rickshaws plying on Bangalore roads everyday. People often complain against autodrivers for refusal to go to the respective destination, demanding excess charges, using faulty meters and rude behaviour. “After I leave work near Shivaji Nagar, I do not get autos to go to Koramangala. There are days when the drivers demand Rs 150 and Rs 250 on the route that generally costs around Rs 60,” says Ashvitha Shetty. But, she, like many others, never files a complaint against the autodrivers as she does not want to waste her energy and time in trying to file a complaint. Taking a positive action, the Bangalore Traffic Police initiated this programme to take strict action against the erring drivers. However, not many people still know about the facility. “There are several billboards in the city asking people to not drink and drive. This is also an equally contentious issue. They should publicise this information to help people and make the facility truly effective,” says IT employee Ravichander. Bangalore Traffice Police however is making progress on using the latest technology to help people lodge complaint against errant drivers. Lodging complaint over SMS is just one example while lodging a complaint on the social networking site Facebook is another. The public can also call, 080- 25588444, 080-25588555. The line is open 24 hours.
