Are tourists safe to travel in India?
A look at incidents when foreign tourists became easy targets.

New Delhi: India does work its charm on people from abroad and within the country, but many a time these unsuspecting tourists fall prey to the violent ways of those who are more than ready to take advantage of their ignorance.

The rape of a Finnish woman in Mumbai on Sunday is definitely not the first of its kind.

Here's a look at past incidents when foreign tourists became easy targets:

  • On May11, 2005, a 47-year-old German tourist was raped by two auto rickshaw drivers in Jodhpur. The two were sentenced to life imprisonment by a fast track court within a month.
  • On March20, 2006, a 26-year-old German student was raped in Alwar by Bitty Mohanty, son of an Orissa IPS officer. Though sentenced to seven years imprisonment by a fast track court, the convict has been absconding after jumping parole.
  • In a third such case in Rajasthan, a Japanese woman alleged that she was drugged, raped and robbed by the son of a hotel manager in Pushkar along with three other men on the April 2, 2006. The main accused was sentenced to seven years rigorous imprisonment.
  • On September 20, 2007, three men in Agra allegedly raped two Japanese women after one of the rapists drugged them. The accused were later arrested following a complaint by the victims.
  • It is ironical that a country that preaches atithi devo bhawa has done little to ensure the safety of its guests.

What's your reaction?
