Sixth seed Andy Murray of Britain suffered an upset 7-6, 6-4 loss to Lu Yen-Hsun of Taiwan in the first round on Monday.
Murray, who picked up his first Masters Series title in Cincinnati this month, lost the first set against the hard-working Taiwanese player ranked 77th in the world, despite having led 5-2.
Lu challenged on set point of the tie-break, but the hawkeye system broke down and umpire Enric Molina of Spain confirmed a Murray double-fault.
Murray, who looked increasingly uncomfortable in his regulation British shirt, had three break points at 4-4 in the second set but the Taiwanese player crucially held serve.
Lu then broke Murray and won the next game at his first match point.
