For the residents of the Old St Augustine School road in Kaloor, a walk through it post 8 pm has become a nightmare. Reason? The only street light on the route has been non-fuctional since the last two months, posing all kind of difficulties for its denizens.
According to the residents, the officials concerned were approached by them several times, but no action has yet been initiated.
“When we approached the Corp officials, they told us that the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation who have taken up work for the North RoB are responsible for the disruption of the electricity in the region which leads to the railway station. The KSEB officials are also washing their hands off by stating that the responsibility does not lie with them,” said Joseph George, a local resident there.
The street which is used regularly by residents as well as tuition students in the late hours has become a source of anxiety and fear and is slowly paving way for anti-social activities. “We often see people drinking in groups on the road, making it difficult for the residents to walk through it,” Joseph added.
Speaking on this, Gracy Joseph, Corporation Councillor said that she is ‘helpless’ as the connection to the street light post (NH-1/6) has been cut off as per the instruction of the DMRC.
However, the DMRC denied this, saying that hadn’t given any instructions for the electricity in the region to be disrupted. “It must be a mistake because we have not undertaken any work in that area. Currently, we are only responsible for all cables going under the RoB where our work is going on. However, the issue will be looked into,” said an official with the DMRC.
Meanwhile, the residents are planning to go to court if nothing is done soon.
